A Brief History of Dinosaurs

Most people think of dinosaurs as big, ferocious and extinct reptiles. That's largely true, but there are some misconceptions. Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes. Dinosaurs were the largest land animals of all time, but a great number of dinosaurs were smaller than a turkey.
Dinosaurs first appeared about 230 million years ago. They ruled the Earth for about 135 million years until an extinction event 65 million years ago wiped out all but bird-like dinosaurs. Scientists don't agree entirely on what happened, but the extinction likely was a double or triple whammy involving an asteroid impact, choking chemicals from erupting volcanoes, climate change and possibly other factors.
Yet only the big, classic dinosaurs are extinct. Birds are living dinosaurs, most experts believe. Think of that next time a pigeon strafes you.
Fossils show that some of the more advanced dinosaurs had feathers or feather-like body covering, but many of them didn't fly and probably didn't even glide. Archaeopteryx, which was for a long time considered to be the first bird (although this status is not certain), is the most famous example. Instead, feathers, rather than being an adaptation for flight, helped these bird-like non-birds stay warm as juveniles.
Many people think extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs were dinosaurs. They were dinosaurs' closest relatives but technically not dinosaurs. Pterosaurs had hollow bones, relatively large brains and eyes, and, of course, the flaps of skin extending along their arms, which were attached to the digits on their front hands. The family includes Pterodactyls, with elaborate, bony head crests and lack of teeth. Pterosaurs survived up until the mass die-off 65 million years ago, when they were went the way of the dodo along with marine reptiles and other dinosaurs.

dragons or dinosaurs creation or evolution

This film discusses the existence of dragons and dinosaurs. It discusses how folk lore shared various similarities across the globe, and how more importantly that the word dinosaur did not even come about until the mid 1800s. Therefore every description prior to this would have used dragon. They showed many different types and how like with much other folk lore once mixed together you get the flying fire breathing reptile looking creatures. They also use a lot of scripture to show how history lines up with the bible. bottom line is if you want to know more about dinosaurs this is the dvd to check out!

Woody Woodpecker Cartoon - English Full Movie

Woody Woodpecker Cartoon - English Full Movie,
Woody Woodpecker is a funny animal cartoon character, an anthropomorphic woodpecker who appeared in theatrical short films produced by the Walter Lantz animation studio and distributed by Universal Pictures. Though not the first of the screwball characters that became popular in the 1940s, Woody is perhaps the most indicative of the type.

Woody was created in 1940 by Lantz and storyboard artist Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, who had previously laid the groundwork for two other screwball characters, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, at the Warner Bros. cartoon studio in the late 1930s. Woody's character and design would evolve over the years, from an insane bird with an unusually garish design to a more refined looking and acting character in the vein of the later Chuck Jones version of Bugs Bunny. Woody was originally voiced by prolific voice actor Mel Blanc, who was succeeded by Ben Hardaway and later by Grace Stafford, wife of Walter Lantz.

Lantz produced theatrical cartoons longer than most of his contemporaries, and Woody Woodpecker remained a staple of Universal's release schedule until 1972, when Lantz finally closed down his studio. The character has been revived since then only for special productions and occasions, save for one new Saturday morning cartoon television series, The New Woody Woodpecker Show, for the Fox Network in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Woody Woodpecker cartoons were first broadcast on television in 1957 under the title The Woody Woodpecker Show, which featured Lantz cartoons bookended by new footage of Woody and live-action footage of Lantz. Woody has a motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on 7000 Hollywood Boulevard. He also made a cameo alongside many other famous cartoon characters in the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Woody Woodpecker and friends are also icons at the Universal Studios Theme Parks worldwide, as well as the PortAventura Park in Salou, Spain (they were originally brought to the park by Universal Studios, and remain there today despite Universal no longer having a financial stake in the park).

Nelson Mandela Dead - 5/12/2013 - Dies at 95

South Africa's first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died, South Africa's president says.

Mr Mandela, 95, led South Africa's transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison.

He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.

In a statement on South African national TV, Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela had "departed" and was at peace.

South Africa’s Nelson Mandela dies aged 95

Richard Ferraris
Nelson Mandela, the father of democratic South Africa and the towering international symbol of racial tolerance, has died at the age of 95.
In a solemn address to the nation, South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, said Mandela had died peacefully in the company of his family on Thursday night.
“Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father. This is the moment of our deepest sorrow,” he said.
“His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world.”
South Africa’s government announced a state funeral for the country’s first black president who had for months been fighting a recurring lung infection, a consequence of the 27 years he spent in apartheid jails.
In a collective outpouring of emotion not seen since Mandela ushered in a new era of democracy in 1994, South Africans mourned the death of their first black president, whose tireless fight for freedom and equality helped force an end to white minority rule.
It was a day long expected and feared by South Africans of all races whom over the last year had closely monitored their ailing former president’s health.
South Africans gathered outside Mandela’s former Vilakazi Street home in Johannesburg overnight where many danced and sang to celebrate Mandela’s remarkable life.
Mr Zuma’s party, the ruling African National Congress (ANC), for which Mandela served as president, acknowledged Mandela’s selfless efforts to overthrow the tyranny of white minority rule.
“Our nation has lost a colossus, an epitome of humility, equality, justice, peace and the hope of millions; here and abroad,” the ANC said.
“Madiba loved South Africa. We recall the strength of his fist punching the air as he stepped out of prison after 27 years; and his sternness during the negotiations for the freedom of our beloved country. We celebrate his ever-present smile, the cheerful Madiba jive, his love for children and great respect for the women of this country.”
Former Archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu, said Mandela’s legacy would ensure stability in the country.
“To suggest that South Africa might go up in flames - as some have predicted - is to discredit South Africans and Madiba’s legacy,” he said.
The Democratic Alliance, the official opposition party to the ANC, also paid tribute to the father of a free South Africa.
“Today the rainbow nation lost its father,”it said. “Today, we are a nation united in grief.”
Known affectionately by his clan name of Madiba, he had been admitted to hospital with lung infections several times since December last year and South Africans braced themselves for the worst on Wednesday when his daughter admitted that he was on his deathbed.
Mandela’s condition deteriorated earlier this year when on June 8, just days before the 37th anniversary of the Soweto uprising that had revitalised the struggle against apartheid, he was admitted to hospital.
Dozens of peaceful protesters were killed on June 16, 1976, which changed the shape of resistance to apartheid. By then South Africa’s racist white regime had successfully undermined the ANC by jailing Mandela along with dozens of his colleagues.
The country marked that anniversary in a sombre mood, with many South Africans expressing their gratitude to Mandela on the day.
Although Mandela and the ANC leadership had been isolated in prison by 1976, the uprising thrust the anti-apartheid movement back into the spotlight. By the 1980s, Mandela had entered secret talks with the apartheid regime, which together with unrest on the streets, a faltering apartheid economy and mounting international pressure eventually created the conditions for a negotiated settlement, for which he won the Nobel Peace prize in 1993.
It was Madiba who led the ANC to South Africa’s first free elections in 1994 and he was swept into power with 63 per cent of the vote.
Fears of a race-based war were defused by Mandela’s moral gravitas both before the poll and during term as president. His efforts towards non-racialism made him a hero across the race divide and his message of peace, tolerance, forgiveness and reconciliation won him adoration the world over.
Mandela served just one term as South Africa’s president, leaving office in 1999, a fact often bemoaned by many South Africans. But on a continent where leaders often spend indefinite terms in office, Mandela was adamant that he step aside – to set an example both to South Africa and the continent.

Giraffes Animals Facts National Geographic

Giraffes are the world's tallest mammals, thanks to their towering legs and long necks. A giraffe's legs alone are taller than many humans—about 6 feet (1.8 meters). These long legs allow giraffes to run as fast as 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour over short distances and cruise comfortably at 10 miles (16 kilometers) an hour over longer distances.
Typically, these fascinating animals roam the open grasslands in small groups of about half a dozen.
Bulls sometimes battle one another by butting their long necks and heads. Such contests aren't usually dangerous and end when one animal submits and walks away.
Giraffes use their height to good advantage and browse on leaves and buds in treetops that few other animals can reach (acacias are a favorite). Even the giraffe's tongue is long! The 21-inch (53-centimeter) tongue helps them pluck tasty morsels from branches. Giraffes eat most of the time and, like cows, regurgitate food and chew it as cud. A giraffe eats hundreds of pounds of leaves each week and must travel miles to find enough food.
The giraffe's height also helps it to keep a sharp lookout for predators across the wide expanse of the African savanna.
The giraffe's stature can be a disadvantage as well—it is difficult and dangerous for a giraffe to drink at a water hole. To do so they must spread their legs and bend down in an awkward position that makes them vulnerable to predators like Africa's big cats. Giraffes only need to drink once every several days; they get most of their water from the luscious plants they eat.
Female giraffes give birth standing up. Their young endure a rather rude welcome into the world by falling more than 5 feet (1.5 meters) to the ground at birth. These infants can stand in half an hour and run with their mothers an incredible ten hours after birth.
Giraffes have beautiful spotted coats. While no two individuals have exactly the same pattern, giraffes from the same area appear similar.

The Olympics: Ancient versus Modern

By Dr Stephen Instone
Religion pervaded the ancient Olympics. Zeus was thought to look down on the competitors, favouring some and denying victory to others. 'You could spur on a man with natural talent to strive towards great glory with the help of the gods', says Pindar in a victory-ode. If an athlete was fined for cheating or bribery (human nature stays much the same over a few millennia), the money exacted was used to make a cult statue of Zeus.
A grand sacrifice of 100 oxen was made to Zeus during the Games, and Zeus the apomuios, or 'averter of flies', was invoked to keep the sacrificial meat fly-free. Olympia was home to one of Greece's great oracles, an oracle to Zeus, with an altar to him consisting of the bonfire-heap created by burnt sacrificial offerings. As the offerings were burnt, they were examined by a priest, who pronounced an oracle - an enigmatic and often ambiguous prediction of the future - according to his interpretation of what he saw. Athletes consulted the oracle to learn what their chances in the Games were.
The Greeks tried to keep some aspects of politics out of the Olympics, but their efforts met then, as such efforts do now, with limited success. The Olympic truce was meant to lead to a cessation of hostilities throughout Greece, to allow competitors to travel and participate safely, but it was not always observed.
The great historian of the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides, tells how in 420 BC the Spartans violated the truce by attacking a fort and dispatching hoplites, and they were therefore banned from the Games. But Lichas, a prominent Spartan, thought of a way round the ban - he entered the chariot race as a Boeotian. When his true nationality was discovered, however, he was given a public flogging at Olympia.
A victorious athlete brought great honour to his home city. The sixth-century Athenian statesman Solon promoted athletics by rewarding Athenian victors at the Games financially - an Olympic victor would receive 500 drachmae (for comparison, a sheep was worth one drachma). Thucydides represents the maverick Athenian leader Alcibiades as trying to drum up political support in 415 BC by boasting of his earlier successes in the Olympic Games.
And it is clear from the victory odes of Pindar and Bacchylides that the Sicilian tyrants in the fifth century aimed to strengthen their grip on affairs by competing in the equestrian events at the Games, and by commissioning famous poets to compose and publicly perform odes celebrating their victories.

The Olympics: Ancient versus Modern part2

By Dr Stephen Instone
For the first 13 Olympics there was only one event, the stadion race , which was a running race up one length of the stadium. How long this race was is a matter for conjecture, as the ancient stadium, 192 meters long, visible at Olympia now, did not exist then.
In 724 BC a longer, there-and-back race, the diaulos, was introduced, followed four years later by the long-distance race, the dolichos, a race of perhaps 12 laps. The emphasis on running in the early years of the Olympics may reflect the perceived basic requirements for a fit soldier.
Boxing, wrestling, and the pancration (the 'all-power' race, combining all types of physical attack) soon followed, along with the pentathlon, and horse-and-chariot racing. A race while wearing armour was introduced in 520 BC, and even a mule race (in 500 BC, but it was not generally popular). So the changing shape of the modern Olympic programme is not without precedent, though the ancient Greeks would perhaps have baulked at the sight of some of our modern 'sports'
The Olympics: Ancient versus Modern part 1

The Olympics: Ancient versus Modern part 1

By Dr Stephen Instone
Traditionally it has always been said that the Games started at Olympia in 776 BC, about the time that Homer was born. But for several centuries before that date Olympia had been a cult site for the worship of Zeus, a numinous location away from human dwellings, overlooked by a hill, with the sacred River Alph flowing through it.
What was it that caused people to change from honouring Zeus solely with dedicatory offerings, to honouring him through athletics? Several factors seem to have been involved. One is the rise of the Greek polis, or city-state. As city-states in different locations grew, each wanted a means of asserting its supremacy, so would send representatives to Olympia to become supreme in physical competition.
Connected with this is the development of military training. The Games were an attractive means of getting men fit. Another factor is the traditional Greek view that the gods championed a winner, so by establishing a competition aimed at producing supreme winners, they were thereby asserting the power and influence on humans of the supreme god, Zeus

Rare albino kangaroo found outside of Canberra is a magical creature

Lazing in the middle of a kangaroo mob just a half hour drive
Rare_Albino_Kangroo_pics,Kangroo_in_Australia_exceptional_Kangroo_of Canbera
from city suburbs is a truly incredible tale of survival, rarely seen in the animal kingdom: an albino kangaroo that has survived beyond its perilous childhood.
Its pure, almost dazzling white coat strikes an amazing contrast against the lush greens and bush greys of the valley floor in the ACT’s Namadgi National Park.
Parks ranger Brett McNamara thinks the albino kangaroo, likely an eastern grey, is probably about two years old, which is extremely rare in the wild.
The usual fate of such an outstanding creature is a very short lifespan. In this part of the world, 30 minutes past Canberra’s southern suburbs, they make easy prey for wild dogs, foxes, and even eagles from the moment they are born. Their pale skin also makes them susceptible to sun burn and cancer, much like a fair-skinned human.

Yasser Arafat Life History Biography and Amazing Pics

Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini was born on 24 August 1929 in Cairo**, his father a textile merchant who was a Palestinian with some Egyptian ancestry, his mother from an old Palestinian family in Jerusalem. She died when Yasir, as he was called, was five years old, and he was sent to live with his maternal uncle in Jerusalem, the capital of the British Mandate of Palestine. He has revealed little about his childhood, but one of his earliest memories is of British soldiers breaking into his uncle's house after midnight, beating members of the family and smashing furniture.
After four years in Jerusalem, his father brought him back to Cairo, where an older sister took care of him and his siblings. Arafat never mentions his father, who was not close to his children. Arafat did not attend his father's funeral in 1952.
In Cairo, before he was seventeen Arafat was smuggling arms to Palestine to be used against the British and the Jews. At nineteen, during the war between the Jews and the Arab states, Arafat left his studies at the University of Faud I (later Cairo University) to fight against the Jews in the Gaza area. The defeat of the Arabs and the establishment of the state of Israel left him in such despair that he applied for a visa to study at the University of Texas. Recovering his spirits and retaining his dream of an independent Palestinian homeland, he returned to Faud University to major in engineering but spent most of his time as leader of the Palestinian students.
